The Ad Man

The University of Chicago’s version of getting its feet wet in the areas of architecture and urban design is by jumping into the deep end, emptying the pool, and leaving everyone else high and dry. (Note to GSD: your colonization of Chicago has officially been trumped.) The search for the global south begins here, south of 52nd Street in Hyde Park. They got the Obama Library, the 2018 American Pavilion in Venice (yawn, but that’s another story), and a shitload of money to play around with urban design as a combination of big data and artistic interventions—and now have access to the third CAB, courtesy of 2019 Artistic Director Yesomi Umolu, who will be joined by co-curators Sepake Angiama and Paulo Tavares. The rich, as they say, get richer, crying all the way to the exquisite photographs of endangered landscapes. The pendulum swing from the 2017 edition unfortunately comes as no surprise: architects replaced by professional curators, design by documentation, and disciplinary specificity by generic practices (“spatial practices,” “discursive practices,” “artistic practices,” “curatorial practices,” et al. practices). Expect lots of evidence and enactment, maps and performances, urgencies and nownesses, and a running list of -tions to engage all manner of public and platform: innovations, interventions, disruptions, conversations, unctions. For those interested in architecture, get in line for the 2021.
